25 years ago tonight I saw all four Monkees performing live at the Arena in Manchester. In fact, my entire family at the time went. My sister sat with me and Stephen while mum and dad with a couple of friends of mine in another block in the same area of the arena floor.
It was something I never thought I’d get to see (and I still feel sad that so many of my lovely overseas Monkees friends didn’t get to see it.) As time goes on I cherish the memories of this concert more and more. That there is only one band member left on this plane of reality is a hard pill to swallow.
The show was amazing and a couple of blurry fan videos of the whole thing exist on YouTube if you fancy checking them out.
I’d not long got on the Internet at this point and was thrilled to have found a flourishing Monkees fan community on there. A quarter of a century on I’m super proud to still call a lot of those people friends and (cyber) family.
The setlist is posted below, and as you can see it was more than just a string of hits. There were some lovely surprises in there.
